CSA Box from All Seasons this Week!

Posted 5/22/2013 12:56pm by Jill Rendleman.

Sorry for being behind on notices to CSA members.  We have a field day here this week to discuss small farm tools and it has really thrown me off!  If anyone would like to tour the farm, this would be a good time.....come Thursday evening from 5:30 to about 7:00.  You can tour the farm and hear about the low carbond hand tools we use and how to use them in your own garden or farm.  You need to register for the event at Food Works website.  If you are not a member of Food Works please consider.  This non profit organization helps to train beginning farmers and also connects farmers with consumers and vice versa.

As for your box.....mixed lettuces, snap peas, maybe some strawberries if they hold out in this cool weather, mixed herbs, and either kale or chard.  Kale is sweet right now due to the weather....it is great chopped up, add some pecans or other nuts, a fruit of your choice (strawberries are good), and a small diced onion or green onion. The dressing is simple oil and vinegar with a little sweet water and a dash of lemon or lime.  My favorite on almost any salad!  Chard is great cooked.....cut the leaves from the stems and slice up, then cut the stems into one to two inch pieces and sautee in a pan with a little olive oil, butter, salt.  After about two minutes add the sliced up leaves and some minced garlic or garlic salt and sautee another minute or so until the chard is just cooked through.   You can eat it just like this, Chef Bill from SIU turned me on to putting this over corn bread that was moist and warm right out of the oven....very good and pretty too with the red chard leaves and the deep golden corn bread.

We are currently transitioning in our crops from things that do well in cool weather to things that do best in warm weather....things coming on are tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, beans, zucchhinni, basil, and more....cant wait.  Thanks for your support and membership!  jill
