Why Organic?

Why All Seasons Farm is Certified Organic

There are a growing number of farms in Southern Illinois which use natural production methods or are moving towards Organic Certification....many have produce for sale at the Neighborhood Co-op in Carbondale or on their farms.  Check them out and support them as they are providing alternative food choices for us all! 

People often ask why All Seasons Farm is Certified Organic. 

1. Food labeled Certified Organic is an independent guarantee set by law.   As part of the Organic Certification process our farm, our records, our growing practices and handling practices are reviewed on paper by an approved Certification Agency and.... receive at least one on farm inspection each year by an Independent Organic Certification Inspector.  The standards we must follow and the inspection process result in an Organic Certification which give our customers a third party guarantee that we use no genetically modified seeds or plants, that we do not use toxins on our farm, and that all of our practices are compliant with the laws which regulate certified organic production.  Buying Certifed Organic is one of single best steps a person can take to know what is in the food they are eating and how it is grown.  

2.  Organic food tastes better.  Maybe that's because food grown with the use of sewer sludge fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, growth hormones, artificial ingredients, irradiation, fertilizers and bug killers made from fuel oil, and anitibiotics are prohibited by law for food labeled Certified Organic.  Believe it or not, U.S. law now allows all of those things to be a part of our food, with the exception of food which is labeled USDA Certified Organic.  

3.  Organic food is in demand.   More and more people each year buy Certified Organic foods.  For the past 10 years it has been the fastest growing part the food industry.  Sadly, this is in part driven by rising number of adults who are making the connection between their health and their childrens health and the ingredients in their food.   

4.  Organic production methods improve the environment.  Certified Organic regulation requires farming practices that improve land and water quality.   Since our goal is to grow food that is dense in nutrients and minerals found naturally in the soil and springs on our farm, we do not use  inputs that will run into the creek below our fields which runs into Cedar Lake, a water supply for local people.  Consider the impact on water and soil quality if the 227 million acres of grain crops in this country eliminated just the use of the "Big Three" prohibitions of the Certified Organic Standard.....genetic engineering, sewage sludge, and irradiation.

5.  Organic production methods are more safe.   Concentrated chemical fertilizers and bug killers are dangerous for farmers to mix  and spray.  Using organic approved inputs such as sea weed, fish emulsion, natural soaps, and on farm compost all of which you can spill on your hands, clothes, or crops make farming a lot more safe for farmers, workers, interns, children, dogs, and visitors.

There is a lot we would all like to see changed in food labeling and production standards.  People who want to see improvements made in how food is grown and labeled will be demanding more and more changes.  Right now, USDA Certified Organic offers is the most rigorus and independent certification available.
